Substanzbüchern eine zentrale Stellung ein, wobei die Frage nach dem Seienden auch die Frage nach der Substanz sein muss. Dabei wird von Aristoteles der Versuch einer Definition der ousia als Wesen oder Substanz im Kontext abstrakter, autonom existierender Universalien als Ursache und Erkenntnisgegenstand von Eigenschaften unternommen.
Aristoteles als Begründer der Metaphysik (neben Platon) vertritt im Rahmen des Projekts, das Seiende als Seiendes zu untersuchen, die Auffassung, dass alles Seiende entweder eine Substanz ist oder auf eine bezogen ist; er thematisiert die Substanz, um nach den Prinzipien und Ursachen der Dinge, d. h. aber nach der Substanz bzw. nach den Konstituentien eines konkreten Einzeldings zu suchen. Dem Aspekt der Unterscheidung der Substanz von ihren Akzidentien (kata symbebekos legomenon) kommt hierbei eine große Bedeutung zu - aus diesem Zusammenhang lässt sich die ousia als das vorrangig Seiende ableiten. Ziel dieser Hausarbeit ist es, Bedeutung und Funktion des Begriffs der ousia im Kontext der Metaphysik als eine Seinslehre des Aristoteles darzustellen und gleichzeitig Aristoteles’ Behauptung, die (erste) Substanz der Dinge sei immer etwas Einzelnes auf eine begründete Verbindung zwischen dem gemeinsamen Allgemeinen und der einzelnen Substanz hin zu untersuchen. Nachgegangen wird weiterhin der Frage nach der Substanz als dem dreifach vorrangig Seienden im Rahmen der Wissenschaft vom Wesen, insofern für Aristoteles die Bedeutung der ousia eine doppelte ist: die der Einzeldinge (individuelle Substanz – prote ousia) und die der allgemeinen Wesen (deutere ousia, beide in ihrer shape eines Für-sich-Seins. Ausgehend von seiner Theorie des Hylemorphismus, welche besagt, dass Dinge aus den zwei Komponenten Materie (hyle) und shape (morphe) bestehen, wird dargelegt, dass dieser Dualismus von Materie und shape für Möglichkeit und Wirklichkeit steht und somit zu der bedeutenden Aussage führt, dass Einzelnes und Allgemeines mithilfe dieser Theorie eine Verbindung eingehen können.
